Sinister

This week my plan was to watch a comedy starring one of my favourite comedians, Kevin James, “Here Comes the Boom”. However, plans end up changing and in this case, change is better.

I was happy that instead of watching a movie that I was mediocrely interested in, I decided to continue with the Halloween spirit and seen “Sinister” instead. Another one of my favourite actors, Ethan Hawke, stars in this horror flick and plays an author who writes stories of true horrific crimes.

This is an exciting thriller of a father desperately trying to redeem himself with a new book and knowingly moves into the house of his primary research, where a family has been murdered. He puts his family and himself at risk of supernatural entities.

I had myself a good scare in this flick. The best part of this film is the suspense. Even though they weren’t many scary parts, they made it so that every scene the angle could possibly show a demon child walking across the room, or a ghost popping up in the screen. The plot was carried out on a good path that made sense. Even though the plot was sort of played out considering all the recent horror films about some sort of supernatural demon force looking to feed on or possess children, the twist that they through in made for an enjoying conclusion.

Like I said before, I am a horror fan and even though I enjoyed “Sinister” this time, I probably won’t remember it a few months down the road. It wasn’t something memorable and I won’t be frightened when it’s dark at bedtime but in the end I enjoyed it for the time being and don’t regret spending my dollars on a good scare. 7/10 well worth it if you happen to be in the Halloween spirit.

Paranormal Activity 4

Halloween is just around the corner so I figured this movie would get me into the Halloween spirit, or so I thought. Paranormal Activity 4 is the 4th installment of the trilogy and its true what they say; the first one is always the best.

So this film took place five years after the 3rd installment but there isn’t a big difference in this film that can really distinguish itself from the previous installments. I mean sure there are scenes that really keep you on your toes and the infamous jumps are there. There really aren’t any known actors to recognize and the plot was just getting exhausting. So there is a strange woman and an even stranger little boy that lives across the street, and one day the mother is sent away due to some sort of illness. The little boy is then welcomed to stay with the family across the street and from there all these strange supernatural occurrence took place.

This movie was quite mediocre in the scare department and the plot was just played out. I must admit there were times I had to close my eyes a bit but nothing really scary every popped out until the end. It was kind of an upset because they really scare the hell out of you right before the credits. If only there were more scenes like that throughout the film.

I thought this movie did not do justice to the previous installments of the Paranormal Activity trilogy. As a horror movie fan I am sad to say that this film deserves a 4/10. Hopefully if there is a 5th installment, they would change up the plot just a bit.

Pitch Perfect

This week’s movie was kind of a curve ball. It was a last minute decision and let’s just say the decision wasn’t entirely my own.

Pitch Perfect, I had no idea what kind of movie I was getting myself into but I was told it was similar to a popular television show called Glee. I figured it couldn’t be terrible because I am proud to say I am a “Gleek” (someone that loves the show Glee).

This film just completely blew me away, it had all the funny components intact and the singing was amazing. So this film is about an extra-curricular program in College that allows students to compete through show-choir competitions meaning they are making music with only their mouths and nothing else. Beca is the main character played by Anna Kendrick who is basically the reluctant hero and is the final ingredient to help the “Bellas” to a state championship.

I thought this film was just flat over the top hilarious, something I did not expect at all. This film really did everything well, it’s a comedy, romance, and the singing and dancing aspect of this film was just magnificent. Whether you are into that whole singing/dancing stuff or not I would still recommend this film to anyone that just wants to see something fun and entertaining. This film deserves a 9/10. Awesome flick, a must see!

Looper

The movie of choice this week was Looper. I was very much anticipating this film because it starred one of my favourite actors, the legendary Bruce Willis.

So this film takes place in the year 2074 when time travel is illegal. It was used as a tool by the mob to not only assassinate but to wipe people out of existence completely. The people that are paid to do this job are called Loopers. So this is where it gets really complicated, the main character Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a Looper whose next job was to kill himself… well older Joe (Bruce Willis). So the plot really thickens past this point and things get even more complicated.

This movie had a great plot to it and very original ideas; I just thought it was a little too farfetched for my taste. It was to a point where it was kind of outrageous. I mean the suspense and action was all there but the film still did not meet my standard for this highly anticipated movie. At times I thought it was a bit slow but the twist and turns in this film really keep you thinking all the way through.

Don’t get me wrong this film isn’t terrible, I am sure some people may really love it; it just didn’t satisfy my taste and was not what I was expecting. I feel this film deserves a 4.5/10. I’m really disappointed with this film and the rating I have given it. I know Bruce Willis is better than that!
